Two pictures from Mitzpe Ramon, overlooking the "machtesh." Pictures cannot capture the vast sweep of the crater, but these will give you an idea. The crater has a crust at the top. The rocks in the foreground are the crust, and you can see the dark line of the crust on the other side of the crater just below the horizon. Inside the crater is sand. For me the most profound experience was the absolute silence when we drove down into the crater itself.
